James Richardson, Townsville, 10 October
Our Cairns Muay Thai coach James Richardson fights Ethan Morrison of Courage Training Centre at Quayside Terminal in Townsville on Saturday 10 October, on the Legacy Fight Promotions card.
If you take his Muay Thai classes at Stratford, this is your coach doing the thing he teaches. It is a three-hour drive and it is worth the trip. Tickets are through Legacy Muay Thai Series — ask at the desk if you want a hand sorting one out.
Kyle Mayocchi, Tokyo, 19 October
Kyle Mayocchi fights Yoshino Hikaru at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo on 19 October, on the Lemino SHOOTO 9 card presented by NTT Docomo. Bantamweight, three five-minute rounds.
Korakuen Hall is one of the sport’s proper rooms — Japanese combat sports have run through that building for decades, and Shooto is among the oldest promotions in mixed martial arts. A long way from Michael Street, and a good place to be asked to fight.
Brodie Mayocchi, Brisbane, 30 October
Eleven days after his brother, Brodie Mayocchi fights Justin Van Heerden for the Beatdown Promotions lightweight championship at the Eatons Hill Hotel in Brisbane, on Friday 30 October.
Brodie goes in undefeated. Beatdown are billing Van Heerden as an Australian veteran. It headlines Beatdown 15, and it is live and free on DAZN — so you can watch this one from the couch at no cost.
Both gyms represented
James coaches at Stratford. Kyle and Brodie are Daryl Mayocchi’s sons, and the Mayocchi family are the reason there is a gym at Michael Street at all — both brothers are in New Zealand at the moment, training at City Kickboxing ahead of these fights.
Whichever gym you train at, you have shared a mat with one of them. Get around them next month.
